Protect your email and your private messages by following these steps:

  1. Use a strong password.
    • Use uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
    • Change your password frequently.
  2. Be aware of using public PCs.
    • Be sure that if you are using a computer in a public place that you logout when you are finished. 
  3. Protect your email address.
    • Be aware of where your email is displayed.
    • Do not include emails in blog posts or social media posts.
  4. Lock up.
    • Lock up your desktop or laptop and close your email clients when you walk away from your desk.
  5. Encryption.
    • Keep your data safe by using encryption and storing encrypted files.
    • Encryption transforms your data into unreadable format that should only be deciphered by a passphrase.
  6. Verify the emails you recieve 
    • Verify the contents of any email attachment before opening it and never click on attachments from unknown persons.
    • Do not respond to any email requesting confidential or personal information (username, password, date of birth, social security number, etc.). Legitimate businesses will never ask for this information via email.
  7. Keep your email inbox organized 
    • Delete messages that you no longer need and empty your trash and outgoing mail folders.
    • Report spam messages and unsubscirbe from any unwanted email senders.
