Week 2 - Cyber Hygiene 101

Cyber Hygiene 101

Cyber Hygiene 101

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time when we focus on promoting safe and responsible online behavior.  In our increasingly digital world, the necessity for understanding and practicing good cyber hygiene cannot be overstated. Just as we take care of our physical health, we must take steps to protect ourselves and our personal information in the digital landscape.

Below are some essential cybersecurity practices we strongly recommend you consider during this month of heightened awareness and as enduring habits.

  • Enhanced Security Measures: Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) wherever possible to safeguard against unauthorized access.

  • Mindful Engagement: Exercise caution when clicking on attachments, even if they appear to come from known contacts. Should you encounter any suspicious emails, kindly report them to [email protected].

  • Password Best Practices: Opt for passwords that are both lengthy and unique. Refrain from reusing passwords across different platforms and consider utilizing a password manager for secure storage.

  • Secure Cloud Data Storage:  Only use secure cloud storage like the SDSU Google Drive.

  • Physical Security: Do not neglect the physical security of your devices. Lock up laptops or other portable devices when they're not in use. Also, ensure that your laptop's hard drive is fully encrypted.

  • Beware of Social Engineering: Be cautious when asked to enter personal or company information over the phone or email, including your username and password, especially unsolicited contacts.

  • Incident Reporting: If something looks suspicious or strange, report by completing a ServiceNow ticket, telling your IT support staff, or emailing [email protected].
